Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
FOX CITIES STADIUM -- The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored six times in the bottom of the third inning for a 6-0 lead over the Beloit Snappers on Tuesday night. The Rattlers held off a late Snapper rally for a 6-5 lead. Adam Moore and Chris Minaker each had two-run singles in the big inning for the Rattlers. Rattler starting pitcher Jose Escalona allowed one run over five innings for his team leading seventh win of the season. Dayton starter Zach Ward lost for the first time this season and saw his record drop to 8-1.
It wasn't easy for Escalona though. He got out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the top of the second inning with a strikeout and a lineout.
Wisconsin (42-74 overall, 15-31 second half) went to work against Ward in the bottom of the third. Travis Scott walked and Robby Hudson doubled to start the frame. Minaker singled in both runners for a 2-0 Rattler lead.
Gerardo Avila, making his Midwest League debut, singled in another run to make it 3-0. Later in the inning, Moore drove in two more runs with another single to put the Rattlers up 5-0 and knock Ward out of the game for his shortest start of the season at just 2-2/3 innings.
Scott greeted Snapper reliever Dan Leatherman with an RBI single to push the final run of the inning home.
Beloit got one of those runs back on a lead off home run by Erik Lis in the top of the fourth, but that was the last run Escalona would allow. The Rattler lefty allowed one run on five hits and struck out five.
The game remained 6-1 until the top of the eighth. Rattler reliever Ruben Flores walked the first two batters of the inning before getting a strikeout. Brian Kappel relieved Flores and an error on a grounder off the bat of pinch hitter Dwayne White allowed the first run to score. Juan Portes was next and came through with a two-run. pinch-hit, triple. An RBI ground out by Tarrence Patters made it 6-5. Kappel got the final out of the eighth on a popout.
Then, Kappel worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning without any problems to preserve the win.
The Rattlers are off on Wednesday. They return to action on Thursday to begin a four game series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Wisconsin will send Marwin Vega (3-8, 5.77ERA) to the hill. Anthony Ortega (1-4, 3.76ERA) is set for the starting assignment for the Kernels. Game time is 7:00pm.
