Lugnuts Hold On For Win Over Kernels

Cedar Rapids, Iowa - The Lansing Lugnuts used four pitchers to hold down the Cedar Rapids Kernels in a 3-2 win at Veterans Memorial Stadium Monday night. Lansing has taken two straight games over the Kernels.

Lansing tied the game in the fourth inning when Brian Pettway drilled his second homer in as many days, a solo shot to center field that made it 1-1.

The Lugnuts took the lead in the sixth. David Hicks flew out to center field when Brad Coon made a diving catch to rob Hicks of a hit. Luke Hetherington moved to third on the play and scored when Coon bobbled the baseball while getting up. The run made it 2-1 in favor of Lansing.

Lansing added an insurance run in the eighth when Joey Metropoulos hit a sacrifice fly to plate Hetherington to make it 3-1.

Cedar Rapids answered with a run of their own in the eighth when Stantrel Smith singled to left to score Josh Davies.

Chi-Hung Cheng (9-5) got the win for the Lugnuts, throwing five innings and allowing one unearned run on two hits. He fanned seven batters in the game.

Daniel Hawkins (0-2) suffered the loss for the Kernels, allowing an unearned run in two innings.

Edward Rodriguez nailed down the save for the Lugnuts, his fourth of the year.

Lansing (59-53, 19-26) and Cedar Rapids (50-54, 19-25) will play the series finale on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. EST. A.J. Wideman (1-3, 4.43) will take the hill for the Lugnuts, while Robert Mosebach (8-6, 3.07) will hurl for the Kernels.
