Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars finished off a sweep of the Peoria Chiefs on Tuesday night at Elfstrom Stadium in front of 9,407 fans, winning 7-1 behind strong starting pitching from Joe Piekarz, great bullpen work from Ben Jukich and Joel Posey and some timely hitting by a 10-hit offensive attack. It's the fourth time this season the Cougars have swept a four-game series.
Anthony Recker's first-inning RBI double that scored Jeff Baisley helped Kane County jump on Chiefs starter Todd Blackford. The Cougars added four runs in the third, capped by Jose Pineda's run-scoring triple and Steve Kleen's sacrifice fly, for a 5-0 game. Blackford left in the fourth inning after a bases-loaded two-run single by Baisley, who now has 96 RBIs and sits in sole possession of fourth place on the Cougars' all-time single-season RBI list.
Ahead 7-0, the Cougars cruised the rest of the way. The Chiefs' only tally was an unearned run in the fifth against Piekarz (6-6), who logged 6 1/3 innings, scattered six hits, walked two and fanned six.
Jukich tossed 1 2/3 innings of one-hit, four-strikeout ball, and Posey pitched a perfect ninth.
The Cougars (28-18) are off Wednesday and start a four-game road series against the Clinton LumberKings on Thursday night at 7 CT. Ken Durost (0-0, 0.00) who joined the team Tuesday, will make his Cougars debut against Juan Jimenez (3-9, 4.31).
