Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
PEORIA, Ill. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels squared off against St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas and landed on the wrong side of a 7-3 decision Saturday versus the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park. Mikolas recorded a quality start and earned the victory for Peoria (34-55).
Cedar Rapids (48-41) quickly gained a 1-0 advantage in the first inning. Edouard Julien and Yunior Severino hit back-to-back singles to open the game. Julien made it to third base and scored during a double play off the bat of Matt Wallner.
The Chiefs were held scoreless for three frames before building a 4-1 lead within the fourth and fifth innings. Leandro Cedeno briefly tied the game in the fourth via RBI single, and Zade Richardson followed with a two-run home run. Masyn Winn added a run during the fifth on a stolen base coupled with an error.
Wallner brought the Kernels within 4-3 in the top of the sixth. Gabriel Maciel and Julien were in scoring position with two outs when Wallner singled to drive in both runners.
Peoria tallied three insurance runs during the seventh. Winn collected a two-run single and later came home courtesy of Richardson's two-out base hit to set the final score at 7-3 Chiefs.
Mikolas (1-0) was the winning pitcher after allowing only three runs over seven innings pitched. He had eight strikeouts and no walks, and he also registered 16 consecutive outs in one stretch.
Sawyer Gipson-Long (0-1) notched a game-high nine strikeouts but lost his Cedar Rapids debut. Gipson-Long surrendered four runs in five innings.
Saturday's contest was played in two hours and 43 minutes. The time of game does not include a six-minute drone delay that paused the tilt within the top of the eighth.
Dozer Park will host the finale of this six-game series Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. with Kernels right-hander Matt Canterino (1-0, 1.00) expected to make his long-awaited return to the Cedar Rapids rotation. Fans can follow the action with Chris Kleinhans-Schulz on www.kernels.com.
