Escobedo's Game Two Walk-Off Clinches Doubleheader Split

(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains (47-42) and the West Michigan Whitecaps (42-47) split Saturday's doubleheader at Classic Park with the Whitecaps taking game one 2-0, but the Captains coming from behind in game two for a 4-3 walk-off win.

Game One

After two scoreless frames, Rey Rivera gave the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. He connected for a solo home run to right field for the first Whitecaps base runner as well as their first run.

West Michigan tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Daniel Cabrera walked to lead off the inning. Andrew Navigato followed and hit a fly ball into the right field corner that was caught by George Valera, but Cabrera tagged up and moved to second on the play. With one out Parker Meadows bounced a single up the middle for the second Whitecaps hit of the day that drove in Cabrera to make the score 2-0.

Reese Olson (1-0) earned his first win as a Whitecap by shutting out the Captains over five innings. He allowed four hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts.

Daniel Espino (0-4) hurled five strong innings on the mound but was handed the loss. He allowed one run on the Rivera solo home run to go with one walk and 11 strikeouts.

Bryce Tassin (4) earned the save with two scoreless innings. He did not allow a base runner and struck out three.

Game Two

West Michigan jumped out to another early lead in game two. Wenceel Perez reached on an infield single with one out in the first inning. Next up was Daniel Cabrera who connected for a two-run home run to give the Whitecaps a 2-0 lead.

Julian Escobedo led off the bottom of the first with a double for Lake County. George Valera walked to put two on with nobody out. José Tena flew out to left field for the first out of the inning, and Escobedo got thrown out at third base on an attempted double steal, but Valera reached second. With two outs Micah Pries ripped a double to drive in Valera and bring the Captains within one run of West MIchigan, trailing 2-1.

Lake County utilized three singles in the bottom of the third to tie the score, 2-2. WIth one out Escobedo and Valera both singled to put runners on first and second for Tena. He drove in Escobedo with the third consecutive single of the inning.

With two down in the bottom of the fifth inning, Raynel Delgado gave the Captains a 3-2 lead with a solo home run to right center field.

In the seventh inning, West Michigan needed a run to extend the game. With Captains closer Jerson Ramirez in the game, Gage Workman led off with a single. After a Rey Rivera strikeout, Cole MacLaren and Jimmy Kerr both singled to load the bases. Jose King followed and hit a high fly ball to left field that was deep enough to drive in Workman on a sacrifice to tie the game 3-3.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, West Michigan reliever Angel Reyes hit Quentin Holmes with a pitch. Next up was Julian Escobedo and he smoked a deep drive off the right center wall. Holmes scored all the way from first base for a 4-3 walk-off win for the Captains.

Ramirez (2-0) received the win despite allowing one run in the top of the seventh. He allowed three hits with a strikeout in one inning of work.

Reyes (1-4) took the loss after allowing the Captains walk-off win in the seventh. He allowed one run in 1.2 innings on two hits.

The Captains and the Whitecaps will finish their season series on Sunday. Mason Hickman gets the ball for the Captains with first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Classic Park.
