Clinton LumberKings News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels stifled the Clinton LumberKings for a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Perfect Game Field. The Kernels continued their dominance of Clinton, now 9-3 on the season including a perfect 5-0 mark in Cedar Rapids.
Cedar Rapids took an early lead off Victor Sanchez, plating a run in the first. Max Kepler drove home Niko Goodrum for the game's first run.
The LumberKings responded quickly, tying the game in the next half inning. Jordy Lara roped a double down the right field line, the only extra base hit on the day for Clinton. Taylor Ard then rolled a grounder to short that went right under the glove of Goodrum. The error allowed Lara to score, making it a 1-1 game.
Mason Melotakis stymied the Clinton lineup. The southpaw kept the LumberKings off the scoreboard besides the one unearned run in the second. Melotakis surrendered just five hits and fanned seven batters in eight innings of work.
The Kernels took the lead for good in the sixth inning. Jeremias Pineda, who delivered the go-ahead RBI in game one, gave Cedar Rapids a 3-1 lead. Pineda belted a two-run double to score Travis Harrison and Michael Quesada to break the 1-1 tie.
Victor Sanchez fell to 2-5 on the season with the defeat, while Mason Melotakis moved to 9-3. Three of his wins have come at the expense of the LumberKings. Madison Boer earned his second save as he finished off Clinton in the ninth.
The LumberKings and Kernels conclude their three-game series with the finale on Monday. Clinton sends right-hander Rigoberto Garcia (0-2, 7.47) against Kernels' right-hander Jose Berrios (6-5, 3.86). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM CT at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
