Kane County Cougars News Release
PEORIA, Ill. - Juan Paniagua started for the Kane County Cougars on Sunday evening at Dozer Park but managed to only record six outs, but the bullpen bailed him out with seven scoreless innings en route to a 6-3 victory over the Peoria Chiefs.
Paniagua walked four hitters in the bottom of the second as the Chiefs (56-46, 18-17) claimed the advantage after a bases-loaded free pass to Ildemaro Vargas. Jonathan Keener's sac fly pushed home Nick Martini to put the Chiefs up by a pair.
In the third, the Cougars (40-60, 10-24) were able to battle right back against Brad Watson (2-4). Two singles and a walk loaded the bags for Rock Shoulders, who hammered a ball off the wall in center to unload the bases. Shoulders then scored on an error by Patrick Wisdom which gave the Cougars a two-run cushion.
Paniagua returned to the hill in the third but gave up a run-scoring single to Jacob Wilson and left the contest with the tying and go-ahead runs on base. Nathan Dorris (5-3) would strand both baserunners as he worked two shutout innings. Starling Peralta replaced Dorris and worked three scoreless frames in his debut for the Cougars.
Jeimer Candelario extended the Cougars' lead to two in the top of the fourth with a single to drive in Albert Almora. Two innings later, Dan Vogelbach added a sac fly which allowed Giuseppe Papaccio to tag home plate. Armando Rivero (S, 1) finished the ballgame up for the Cougars by recording the final six outs while striking out five including the final four men he faced.
The Cougars and Chiefs complete their three-game series on Monday night at Dozer Park with a 7:00 first pitch. Right-hander Jose Rosario (0-6) starts for the Cougars against fellow righty Thomas Lee (3-1). The Cougars are back at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Tuesday night to face the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at 6:30. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
