Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs stranded 11 runners on base on their way to a 6-3 loss to the rival Kane County Cougars on Sunday. The loss dropped the Chiefs to 56-46 on the year and 18-17 in the second half as they stay in the wild card position in the Western Division.

The Chiefs scored in the second inning without needing a hit against Juan Paniagua. Jacob Wilson and Patrick Wisdom reached on back-to-back walks to start the inning, and Wilson moved to third as Nick Martini grounded into a fielder's choice. Jeremy Schaffer walked to load the bases, and Wilson came around to score as Ildemaro Vargas walked as well. Jonathan Keener knocked in Martini with a sac fly to center to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead. C.J. McElroy singled to right for the first hit of the inning but Schaffer was thrown out trying to score from second to end the inning.

The Cougars responded with four runs in the top of the third inning against Brad Watson. Kevin Encarnacion reached on a strike three wild pitch, but was thrown out at third on a Giuseppe Papaccio single as he advanced to second on the throw. Following Albert Almora's fly out, Dan Vogelbach walked and Jeimer Candelario singled to load the bases. Rock Shoulders doubled to plate all three base runners and give the Cougars a 3-2 lead. After Marco Hernandez was hit by a pitch, Shoulders came around to score on an error by Wisdom at third to give the Cougars the 4-2 advantage.

The Chiefs got one of those runs back in the bottom of the third inning. Charlie Tilson walked to lead off the frame and stole second. He moved to third on a Breyvic Valera infield single, and came around to score on a Wilson RBI single, cutting the Cougars lead to 4-3. Nathan Dorris relived Paniagua and forced Wisdom to pop out, Martini to ground into a fielder's choice and Schaffer to strike out to end the inning with runners left at the corners.

Kane County extended their lead in the fourth inning. With two outs, Almora singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He came around to score on Candelario single to right, putting the Cougars up 5-3. With Brady Adamek on the mound the Cougars added to their lead with a run in the sixth as Vogelbach drove in Almora with a sacrifice fly to center to put the Cougars up 6-3.

The Cougars bullpen prevented a Chiefs comeback, holding them scoreless through seven innings. The Chiefs put two runners on base in the fifth and sixth innings against former Chief Starling Peralta, but Schaffer grounded into a fielder's choice in the fifth and Valera did the same in the sixth ending each threat.

Watson (3-3) gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking two and fanning four in five innings. Adamek allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out one in two innings. Joe Scanio pitched two perfect innings in relief while striking out one.
