Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Eight strong innings from starting pitcher Mason Melotakis and a 2-RBI double by Jeremias Pineda pushed the Kernels to a 3-1 win over the Clinton LumberKings on Sunday afternoon.
Twelve of the 13 games played between the Kernels and LumberKings in 2013 have been decided by three runs or less.
The Kernels were the first on the scoreboard as they took a 1-0 lead in the 1st. Niko Goodrum reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on Max Kepler's RBI single.
Clinton tacked on a run in the 2nd to tie the game at 1. Jordy Lara doubled with one out and later scored on an error by the shortstop Goodrum, off the bat of Taylor Ard.
Both offenses were at stalemate until the 6th when the Kernels pushed across two runs to take a 3-1 lead. With 2 outs, Jeremias Pineda hit a drive off the left center field wall to score Travis Harrison and Michael Quesada. Harrison and Quesada reached on a fielder's choice and single, respectively.
Kernels center fielder Jonathan Murphy went 2-for-4 with a stolen base on Sunday. Murphy extended his hit streak to 10 games.
Melotakis turned in a tremendous outing on the mound. Melotakis (9-3) went 8 innings, allowing just one unearned run on five hits. The lefty didn't walk a batter and struck out seven. At one stage in the game, Melotakis retired 13 batters in a row. The LumberKings had three hits through the first 3 innings, but didn't record a hit again until the 8th.
Madison Boer pitched the 9th, recording his 2nd save of the season after striking out a batter and inducing D.J. Peterson into a game-ending double play ground out.
Clinton starter Victor Sanchez went 6 innings in his second start since throwing a no-hitter on July 17. Sanchez (2-5) allowed three runs on six hits while walking three - a season high - and striking out four. David Holman came out of the bullpen to pitch the final 2 innings, striking out one.
