Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Beau Amaral belted a grand slam home run to cap off a six-run eighth inning as the Dayton Dragons battled back from a 5-1 deficit to defeat the Fort Wayne TinCaps 8-5 on Sunday afternoon. The win continued a string of dramatic home victories for the Dragons over the last two weeks.
Trailing 5-1 with two outs in the seventh, Dayton's Sammy Diaz delivered a run-scoring single to pull the Dragons within three. In the eighth, Seth Mejias-Brean led off the inning with a home run to center field, his ninth of the season, to make it 5-3. Tanner Rahier walked and with one out, Joe Hudson singled to right field. Adam Matthews followed with a run-scoring single to right to bring in Rahier and make it 5-4. Zach Vincej singled to center to load the bases. Amaral then hit a 3-2 pitch over the right field fence, the Dragons fourth grand slam homer in July, to give Dayton an 8-5 lead.
Dragons reliever Joey Housey (2-1) earned the win, retiring all four batters he faced. Alejandro Chacin pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his second save.
The Dragons improved to 20-16 with the win, going four games above the .500 mark for the first time this season. Fort Wayne fell to 12-22 with the loss.
Over the Dragons last eight home games, they are 6-2. In five of the six wins, they have come back from deficits of at least three runs. Overall, the Dragons are 15-8 over their last 23 games.
The Dragons finished with 12 hits. Vincej led the way with three. Amaral and Mejias-Brean each had two. Mejias-Brean extended his hitting streak to 12 straight games, the longest of the 2013 season for the Dragons.
Dragons starting pitcher Sal Romano provided a credible performance. He worked five and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
The Dragons host the TinCaps in the series finale on Monday at 7:00 p.m. as the Dragons try for the sweep. Ismael Guillon (4-7, 6.37) will start for Dayton against Fort Wayne's Joe Ross (4-5, 3.73).
