
Kernels drop Rattlers

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA -- Aaron Peel homered and drove in four runs to lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels to an 11-4 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Freddy Sandoval and Michael Collins each had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI for the Kernels.
Cedar Rapids (21-31) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning. Alexis Casilla singled, stole second, went to third on a single by Sandoval, and scored on a passed ball.
The Kernels knocked around Rattler starter Aaron Jensen in the bottom of the second inning. Richard Giannotti drove in a pair of runs with a double. Sandoval made it 4-0 with an RBI single. Then, Peel lined a three-run homer to left field and it was 7-0 Cedar Rapids.
Wisconsin (30-22) loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the third inning and scored one run on a Josh Womack sacrifice fly. The Rattlers scored another run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Brandon Green.
But, the Kernels got two runs in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles by Peel and Collins to push their lead to 9-2.
Sebastien Boucher brought the Rattlers closer with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the sixth.
Collins made it 10-4 with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. Sandoval knocked in the final run of the game with a single in the eighth.
The loss dropped the Rattlers into a first place tie atop the Western Division of the Midwest League with the Clinton LumberKings. Clinton scored eight runs in the top of the third inning on their way to a 9-2 win at Lansing. Both the Rattlers and LumberKings are 30-22 with eighteen games remaining in the first half.
Game two of the series at Veterans Memorial Stadium is Wednesday night. Wisconsin's scheduled starting pitcher, Julio Santiago, will be making his Midwest League debut. Rafael Rodriguez (4-2, 2.94ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Kernels. Game time is 7:00pm.
