Battle Creek, MIâ The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays limited the Peoria Chiefs to five his en route to a 5-1 win Tuesday night at C.O. Brown Stadium. With the loss, their second straight, the Chiefs finish May 17-13 and fall to 25-27 overall.
The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd when Alberto Garcia doubled home Luis Montanez. But on the play, Drew Larsen was thrown out at the plate and the Chiefs rally ended.
The Devil Rays came right back in the bottom of the inning against Matt Weber. With one out, Francisco Leandro singled and went to second on an errant pickoff throw by Weber. After a strikeout, Christian Lopez singled up the middle to tie the game 1-1.
In the 3rd, Reid Brignac led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a wild throw by catcher Oscar Bernard. After a groundout, John Jaso gave the Devil Rays a 2-0 lead when he drove home Brignac with a grounder to short.
The game stayed 2-1 into the 7th inning when Chris Nowak crushed a long homer into left off Weber. Southwest Michigan scored a pair off the Peoria bullpen in the 8th to ice the game. Jaso led off with his sixth homer of the season, a solo shot to left center off Paul Schappert. Back to back singles and an error led to the fifth and final run of the night for the Devil Rays.
Weber (3-6) took the loss despite pitching into the 7th. He went 6 2/3 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out three. James Houser picked up the win allowing just four Chiefs hits and one run in seven innings of work.

Alberto Garcia (1B) âGarcia started the night 9th in the MWL in hitting and was 1-for-3. He doubled home the Chiefs lone run in the 2nd giving the first baseman 20 RBI on the season. Notes... Patterson was 0-for-3 with a walk, ending his 14 game hit streak...Aaron Sisk was 0-for-4 ending his 11 game hit streak...The Chiefs were 17-13 in May... The Chiefs committed three errors in a game for the first time since May 6th...The only other time the Chiefs allowed two homers in one game this season was April 10th at Wisconsin...The two teams play game two of the four game series Wednesday night at 7:05 EST...The Chiefs will have RH Sean Gallagher on the moung against LH Jared Lavergne...The game can be heard on 1350 WOAM and www.peoriachiefs.com.
