Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (May 31, 2005) - For the second time in four games, the Burlington Bees (24-27) got a walk-off single by 2B Irving Falu with the bases loaded to drive in Alan Moye in the bottom of the ninth inning. On Saturday night, it came on the first pitch by Alexander Farfan of the Dayton Dragons. Tonight, it was Kevin Culpepper (4-3) of the Beloit Snappers (25-27), as the Bees took game one of this four-game series 3-2 at Community Field. The Bees are now 4-1 on this home stand.
Both teams started slowly. Bees' starter Danny Christensen worked a season-high five shutout innings and allowed three hits and one walk while striking out four. Snappers' starter Kyle Waldrop retired the first eleven batters he faced before Mario Lisson singled into left field with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Lisson advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored when 1B Mark Zamocj committed an error on a ground ball off the bat of Ed Lucas.
Patrick Hicklen took over for Christensen in the top of the sixth and was greeted by three straight hits. Angelo Fermin and Luke Hughes singled and Fermin scored on a double to left by David Winfree. After a popout, Paul Rutgers put the Snappers in the lead with a sacrifice fly to left that drove in Hughes. Hicklen (3-1) would finish the game and pick up the win. He allowed two runs on five hits in four innings while walking two and striking out one.
Waldrop worked through six innings and allowed just the one unearned run on four hits while striking out five. Culpepper (4-3) took over in the seventh and allowed just a bunt single by Kenard Springer through his first two innings. In the bottom of the ninth, Lucas led off with a single to center. Moye laid down a bunt and when Culpepper's throw to second pulled Fermin off the bag for an error, the Bees had two on with nobody out. Eddie Solis laid down the sacrifice that moved the runners to second and third. After an intentional walk to Springer, Miguel Vega chopped an 0-2 pitch on a high hop to shortstop. Fermin's only play was to first as Lucas scored to tie the game. The Snappers then intentionally walked pinch-hitter Rusty Brown to set up Falu's game-winning hit.
The Bees will have another chance to match their longest winning streak of the year when they go for three in a row tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. LH Matt Campbell (1-5, 4.00) will start for the Bees against RH David Shinskie (0-1, 3.46) for Beloit. The gates open at 6:00 for a Kids Eat Free Wednesday. Any youth that buys a ticket at the ticket window gets a coupon for a free hot dog and drink at the concession stand. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
