Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays pounded out 12 hits as James Houser threw seven strong innings in a 5-1 win over the Peoria Chiefs Tuesday night at C.O. Brown Stadium.

Houser retired 11 consecutive batters at one point in earning his third win of the season. In his seven innings, Houser allowed just four hits, one run, one walk and struck out five. Jose De La Cruz entered with a 3-1 lead and held the Chiefs scoreless for two innings in earning his sixth save.

Down 1-0 in the second inning, the Rays used an RBI single by Chris Nowak to tie the game. After a bunt single and two base error by Peoria starter Matt Weber, Reid Brignac was at third base to start the third inning. John Jaso's ground ball to short plated Brignac for the 2-1 lead and the Rays never looked back.

Nowak homered with one out in the seventh to make it 3-1 and Jaso followed with one of his own in the eighth. The Rays last run came on a bunt play with two on and no one out. The third baseman fielded the sacrifice and threw it down the left field line allowing Travis Schlichting to score the game's final tally.

Devil Rays LHP Jarrad Lavergne (0-5, 6.39) will take the mound against one of the best pitchers in all of minor league baseball, Peoria's Sean Gallagher (5-1, 0.75) in a Wednesday night game that will begin at 7:05 p.m.
