Edwards gets the call to Rancho
May 31, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Cedar Rapids Kernels are pleased to announce that pitcher Bill Edwards has become the second Kernel to earn a promotion to Rancho Cucamonga of the California League this season. The Kernels' parent club, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, announced the decision to elevate Edwards to the Quakes following the Kernels 6-4 loss to South Bend Monday afternoon.
Taking the place of Edwards on the Cedar Rapids roster will be left-handed starting pitcher Joe Torres.
Edwards was perhaps the team's most consistent pitcher since joining the starting rotation from the bullpen on April 14th. At the time of his promotion the right-handed hurler was 5-1 with a 3.20 earned run average. Edwards pitched 56 1/3 innings for the Kernels and allowed 25 runs (20 earned), 46 hits, and 20 walks while striking out 43 batters. Midwest league hitters managed just a .231 average against him in 10 appearances.
Torres was listed as the organization's top prospect by Baseball America in 2001 but has seen his career sidetracked by Tommy John surgery which forced him to miss all of last season. Torres joins the Kernels from Rancho Cucamonga where he was 0-4 with an ERA of 18.00 over 20 innings.
The 10th player taken in the first round of the 2000 free agent draft, Torres made his professional debut that summer at Boise where he went 4-1 with a 2.54 ERA. He split time between Cedar Rapids and Provo in 2001, going 0-3 with a 5.82 ERA for the Kernels. Torres was again a member of the Kernels in 2002, posting an 11-8 record with a fine 3.52 ERA in 25 starts. He split 2003 between Rancho and Mesa before sitting out all of last season while recouping.
The Kernels active roster remains at 25 players as the team welcomes Western Division-leading Wisconsin to Veterans Memorial Stadium for four games beginning with a 6:30 p.m. game tonight.
