
Cougars Come Back, Fall Short in West Michigan

Grand Rapids, MI â The Kane County Cougars trailed 10-1 entering the seventh inning Tuesday night against the West Michigan Whitecaps, but their rally fell short in an 11-10 defeat in a rematch of the team's from last year's league championship series. Javier Herrera and Tommy Everidge each drove in three for the Cougars.
Kane County starter Ryan Ford gave up three unearned runs in the first and four tallies in the third for an early 7-0 deficit. Eddie Kim's sacrifice fly in the fifth off Whitecaps starter Jair Jurrjens f cut it to 7-1. Clay Tichota reliever Ford, gave up three runs in two innings for the 10-1 score entering the seventh. Myron Leslie drew a walk from Tony Peralta, Eddie Kim doubled and Everidge nailed a two-run two-bagger for a 10-3 deficit.
Kane County sent nine men to the plate in the eighth, scoring five runs. Kevin Melillo and Kory Wayment walked, Hererra doubled home Melillo and Raul Padron singled in Wayment. Leslie roped a run-scoring hit to cut it to 10-6. After Jose Pineda singled to load the bases, Kim got one RBI from a groundout and Everidge cracked a sacrifice fly to make it 10-8.
West Michigan scored against J.R. Pickens in the bottom half to bring the score to 11-8. With Melillo at first in the ninth, Herrera smashed a two-run homer for the 11-10 mark that became the final.
Ford (5-4) took the loss and Jurrjens (5-1) got the win. Ian Ostlund got his second save. Game two is Wednesay night at 7 EDT. Mike Rogers (1-3, 5.04) goes for the Cougars (22-29) against Dallas Trahern (2-5, 3.45) for the Whitecaps (24-28).
