Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Aaron Peel blasted his seventh home run of the season and his teammates combined for 11 hits as the Kernels handed Western Division leading Wisconsin an 11-4 loss Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium in front of 1,541 fans.
Peel's line drive blast came during a six-run second inning that all but put the game away for the Kernels thanks to terrific pitching by starter Fernando Rodriguez and three members of the Kernels bullpen.
Richard Giannotti smoked a double off the glove of Wisconsin first baseman Marshall Hubbard to plate Tommy Duenas and Jordan Renz. Giannotti was eventually called out at home on a fielder's choice in a play that was rightfully disputed by manager Bobby Magallanes. Giannotti's foot clearly slid across the plate before catcher Rob Johnson applied the tag.
The Kernels would not have to wait long for redemption. With Casilla safe at first, Wisconsin starting pitcher Aaron Jensen plunked Sean Rodriguez in the square of the back to bring Peel to the plate. After seeing a few pitches Peel tied Warner Madrigal for the team lead in home runs with a laser beat over the wall in left field.
Single runs in the first, sixth, and eighth as well as a two-spot in the fourth gave Fernando Rodriguez all the cushioning he'd need on a perfect night for baseball. The El Paso, TX, native gave his teammates five innings of five-hit baseball, allowing just two runs while striking out three to earn his first victory since April 13th when he defeated Burlington.
Nic Touchstone, Francisco Cordova, and Miguel Gonzalez combined to allow just two runs over the game's final four innings to lock up the team's 22nd victory of the year.
Seven of the starting nine hit safely in Tuesday night's romp with Freddy Sandoval going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Peel had four RBI, including a run-scoring single in the fourth.
Despite not collecting a hit Sean Rodriguez added three runs to up his season total to 40, just one behind league leader Agustin Morillo of South Bend. Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, reached first on a wild pitch after striking out, and walked, scoring all three times he reached base safely.
By scoring 10 or more runs the Kernels triggered the popular Taco Bell Ten Spot promotion for Wednesday. Area residents can order up to 10 beef tacos at participating Taco Bell locations and pay just 39 cents each all day long.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. It will be Buck-A-Cup Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Gates open at 6 p.m.
