Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - Beginning a crucial series for the Dayton Dragons (22-29) in regards to their well-being in the standings, the Miami Valley's team rode a walk-off solo homer in the ninth by Jeremiah Piepkorn to an exhilarating 4-3 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks (31-21) before 8,015 at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday night.
The Dragons, who face South Bend six more times before the conclusion of the first half of play, move to within 8.5 games of the Silver Hawks, who took three of four from the Dragons to begin the season at Coveleski Stadium.
Piepkorn's homer came with one out in the ninth off South Bend reliever Esmerling Vazquez (L, 1-1), who drilled a Vazquez fastball over the left field Dragons Lair. Piepkorn, who has seen his bat heat up recently again, finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs.
The game though was a back-and-forth affair, with the Dragons striking first in the second inning for a 2-0 lead. Bobby Mosby, playing in his first game at Fifth Third Field since April 15th, began the fray with an RBI double into the left-centerfield gap, followed immediately by John Purdom's RBI single into right.
South Bend tied the game in the fifth, derailing an admirable effort by Dragons starter Ramon Ramirez, who held the Silver Hawks scoreless on two hits through four innings. Jereme Milons knocked home two runs on a rocket-like double into left, following a hit-by-pitch to Billy Lockin and an RBI single to Emilio Bonifacio.
The Dragons retaliated immediately in the bottom of the inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by Paul Janish, but were knotted up again at three apiece in the top of the sixth on Allen Mottram's long solo homer to left.
Blake Hendley (W, 5-0) stifled South Bend with two strong innings of relief, retiring all six batters he faced for his fifth win of the year.
The Dragons and South Bend continue their four game series with game two of the set tomorrow at Fifth Third Field, with the first pitch set for 7pm. 1410-AM ESPN Radio carries the game live with the pre game show beginning at 6:30 PM, with RHP Zac Stott (1-1, 3.03 ERA) getting the ball for the Dragons while RHP Koley Kolberg gets the starting nod for the Silver Hawks.
