
Kernels drop close game to Whitecaps, 2-1

April 30, 2009 - The West Michigan Whitecaps scored two runs in the seventh inning en route to a 2-1 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Thursday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Chao-Ting Tang had an RBI triple followed by a sacrifice fly by Luis Palacios off Kernel reliever Francis Cabrera (1-1).
Kernels starter Ryan Chaffee allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings and struck out four in a no-decision effort. West Michigan reliever Anthony Shaller allowed a run on three hits over 3.2 innings for the win and Jared Gayhart earned his first save.
The Kernels scored their run in the sixth inning on an RBI groundout by Matt Craford to score Anel De Los Santos. De Los Santos was 1 for 3 to extend his hitting streak to a team-high eight games. Darwin Perez was 1-2 with a double and Tyson Auer and Alexi Amarista added singles.
The final game in this three game series is Friday afternoon at 12:05 pm as Christian Scholl starts for the Kernels against lefty Casey Crosby for West Michigan.
