West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Three Kernels' pitchers combined to shutout the Midwest league's best hitting team, the West Michigan Whitecaps, 3-0, on Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Tyler Chatwood and two relievers kept the 'Caps off the board on three hits for the victory in game one of the series. The Whitecaps (13-5) have now lost consecutive games for the first time this season.
The story of the night was the tremendous pitching Cedar Rapids threw at the 'Caps. Chatwood (1-0) tossed 6 powerful innings, striking out 4 while allowing just one hit. Mike Kohn then came on in relief, and his 2 innings were very impressive too. Kohn struck out 5 and walked 1 as he gave up 2 hits. In the ninth, West Michigan got two runners aboard via walks to start the inning. But Vladimir Veras (S, 3) rebounded to strike out the side to end the game.
Kernels' 2B Alexi Aramista was the hitting star of the game. Aramista finished with three hits needing only a homerun for the cycle. He gave Cedar Rapids the lead in the first with a sacrifice fly to bring home Matt Crawford. Aramista's RBI triple in the third put Cedar Rapids on top, 2-0. And he scored the third run of the game in the ninth when Angel Castillo singled him in.
Gustavo Nunez, Bryan Pounds, and Ronnie Bourquin each had hits.
Spot-starter Victor Larez (0-1) lasted 3 innings for the Whitecaps. Tyler Conn, Tyler Stohr and Anthony Shawler all worked in relief.
The 'Caps will start reliever Brayan Villareal in game two of the series. Cedar Rapids will call on Ryan Chaffee. Game two is scheduled to begin Thursday night at 7:35 p.m. from Veterans Memorial Stadium.
