Six Runs and Nine Hits Not Enough for Bees

Burlington, IA (April 30, 2009) - The Burlington Bees put up six runs but it was not enough as Peoria defeated the Bees 10-6 Thursday night at Community Field. The loss marked the fourth loss in a row for the Bees.

Peoria opened the game by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. The Bees came back with one run in the bottom of the inning. Kyle Martin led the inning off with a double and then moved to third on a ground-out. After Eric Hosmer walked, Nick Francis hit into a ground-out to score Martin and get the Bees back within one run.

Peoria scored three runs in the second and one run in the third to take a 6-1 lead. The Bees got back within three runs by scoring two runs in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Hosmer doubled. Francis then came to the plate and hit his team-leading fourth homerun of the season to make it a 6-3 game.

Peoria once again continued to put up runs by scoring one run in both the fifth and sixth innings and then two runs in the seventh inning to take a 10-3 lead. The Bees did make a little noise in the bottom of the ninth. Wilson Tucker and Patrick Norris both singled in the inning before Martin was walked to load the bases. Hosmer then doubled to clear the bases and get the Bees within four runs. The Bees could not get any more runs across as they fell 10-6.

Luis Cota got the start for the Bees and took the loss to move to 0-2 on the season. In four innings, he allowed six runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits. James Thompson did pitch 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to finish the game.

The Bees had nine hits in the game. Both Hosmer and Norris had three hits. Hosmer and Francis each had three RBI. Martin scored two runs.

The Bees conclude the series with Peoria Friday night at 6:30 at Community Field. Zach Peterson is the scheduled starter for the Bees.
