Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Beloit, WI - For the second night in a row, Cedar Rapids scored first on Beloit with a two-out RBI single by Noah Cardenas to go up 1-0 in the second inning. Beloit came back with five runs in the bottom of that second frame to grab a 5-1 lead, one they would never lose, topping the Kernels for the second straight night, 5-2.

Kyle Jones got the start for Cedar Rapids coming off a six-inning outing, allowing one run last time out against Quad Cities. After a 1-2-3 bottom of the first, he toed the rubber in the bottom of the second frame with a 1-0 lead. Yiddi Cappe led off the inning with an infield single reaching safely on a dribbler down the third base line. After he was bunted over to second, Brady Allen also reached on an infield single to the left side, putting runners on first and second with one out. Four straight hits followed. Ynmanol Marinez drove home a run with a double, Zach Zubia plated two with a single, Josh Zamora doubled then scored along with Zubia on a Dalvy Rosario two-run single. When the smoke cleared after two innings, it was 5-1 Beloit.

Jones would pitch a scoreless third inning to finish with a final line of 3.0 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 K.

Jones' counterpart Evan Fitterer gave the Sky Carp a really solid starting pitching performance for the second straight night. The right-hander went all the way into the seventh frame and finished going 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out seven.

The Kernels scored the second run issued to Fitterer in the seventh inning, loading the bases on a single and two walks and scored on a Ben Ross sacrifice fly to make the game 5-2. The inning ended with the bases on a Kala'i Rosario ground out, who represented the go-ahead run. Cedar Rapids would fail to put another runner in scoring position in the final two innings and drop game two of the series 5-2.

One bright spot of the Kernels was the bullpen. The combination of Malik Barrington, Niklas Rimmel and Matthew Swain combined for five scoreless innings, and Barrington struck out five batters in just his two innings of work.

Cedar Rapids records just three hits in the loss, the fifth straight for the club that drops to 5-5 on the season. With the win, Beloit improves to 7-4 and remains tied atop the Midwest League West division with South Bend.

The two will meet again in game three of the six-game series tomorrow night; Jordan Carr looks to right the ship for Cedar Rapids against Beloit's Alex Williams at 6:35.
