Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Lake County Captains made the most of their first visit to Perfect Game Field in handing the Cedar Rapids Kernels their third straight loss to an Eastern Division club by the score of 10-1 in front of 3,790 fans at Perfect Game Field on Saturday night. Lake County starter Matt Packer (8-4) held the Kernels to a run on seven hits and struck out four over two innings for the win.
The Captains scored an unearned run off Kernels starter Tyler Kehrer (3-4) in the top of the first, but tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Jean Segura scored when Casey Haerther hit into a double play. That would be the only run the Kernels would tally against a Captains pitching staff with a 3.40 team ERA.
Lake County took a 3-0 lead in the fourth on a two run homer by Greg Fogia. Then, they unlimbered the big guns, scoring seven runs in the 8th inning, the big blow a grand slam by Chris Kersten off Tyler Skaggs.
Jon Karcich went 2-3 and was the only Kernel with more than one hit. Justin Bass and Michael Wing both added a double as Casey Haerther and Matt Long extended their hitting streaks to nine games.
The Kernels look to snap their skid against the East on Sunday afternoon when they take on the Captains at 2:05 pm. It's a 104.5 KDAT Sunday Family Day when the gates open at 1:00 pm. Fans can get autographs on the concourse before the game, enjoy Papa Balloon and Snow White on the concourse during the game and play catch and run the bases after the game thanks to Beef O'Brady's.
The world-famous Klements Sausage Race will be at Perfect Game Field on Sunday and run their race during the game.
