Dayton Dragons News Release
Burlington, Iowa-Dayton starting pitcher Jacob Johnson allowed two hits and two runs over six and one-third innings to lead the Dragons to a 6-2 victory over the Burlington Bees on Sunday afternoon. The win snapped the Dragons seven-game losing streak.
Johnson (5-6) was nearly perfect over the first six innings. He allowed no runs on one hit and only three base runners. He left with a 6-1 lead after facing three batters in the seventh. The 19-year-old from Lake Worth, Florida walked just two on the day and struck out a season-high seven batters.
The Dragons broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning. Didi Gregorius singled to start the inning and Ryan LaMarre was hit by a pitch. Tommy Nurre followed with a single to center to drive in Gregorius with the game's first run. After Cameron Satterwhite walked to load the bases, LaMarre scored on Frank Pfister's ground out, and Alex Oliveras followed with a two-run single to center to make it 4-0.
LaMarre belted his second career home run in the seventh, a two-run shot to left field, to make it 6-0.
Johnson issued a lead-off walk in the bottom of the seventh. One batter later, Fernando Cruz tripled in a run as Johnson departed. Ezequiel Infanted came on to pitch and allowed an RBI single to Luis Del Rosario as Burlington pulled to within four at 6-2, but Infante allowed no hits or runs runs the rest of the way as the Dragons put an end to their losing streak.
Dayton finished with six hits. Oliveras went 2 for 4 with two runs batted in. Gregorius was 2 for 5 and scored two runs. The Dragons stole four bases including two by Andrew Means.
Burlington finished with just three hits. The pitching performance was a welcome one for the Dragons, who had allowed their opponents to score at least 10 runs in three of the previous four games.
The Dragons (8-15) battle the Bees (11-11) on Monday at 7:30 p.m. (EDT) in the rubber match of the three-game set. Justin Walker (3-8, 5.34) will start for Dayton against Burlington's Sugar Ray Marimon (2-2, 7.67). The next home game is Wednesday, July 21 vs. the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
