
Unbelievable - Kernels score record 14 runs in 7th inning for 18-11 win

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels sent 20 batters to the plate and scored a team-record 14 runs in the seventh inning en route to an 18-11 win over the Lake County Captains on Sunday afternoon at Perfect Game Field. The Kernels also set season game highs in runs scored, hits (21) and RBI (16).
Lake County jumped on Kernels starter Stephen Locke for nine runs in the first five innings, including home runs by Chris Kersten and Adam Abraham. The Kernels cut the lead to 9-2 on a two run homer by Michael Wing, his third of the season. The Captains increased the lead to 11-2 as Abraham hit his second HR of the game off Manaurys Correa and the Kernels made it 11-3 as Richard Cates hit a sac fly.
The Kernels then launched into the seventh inning, batting for 50 minutes, as 20 players went to the plate. The Kernels hit for the cycle in the inning as Jean Segura and Justin Bass tripled, Matt Long and Casey Haerther doubled, and Jon Karcich capped the inning with a solo home run to put the Kernels ahead 12-11.
Segura finished the game 3-6 with two triples and 2 RBI; Justin Bass was 3-5 with a triple and 3 RBI; and Richard Cates was 1-3 with 3 RBI. Kernels reliever David Carpenter (2-3) picked up the win with two innings of relief and Johnny Hellweg worked a scoreless ninth. Lake County reliever Ryan Morris (0-1) took the loss, giving up six runs on four hits over a third of an inning.
