
Chiefs Shuts Out Hot Rods For 9-0 Win Sunday

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs took advantage of poor fielding by the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Sunday, plating eight unearned runs in the first two innings on their way to a 9-0 victory. The win is the fifth consecutive for the Chiefs and improves their record to 9-12 in the second half of the season and 47-43 overall.
The Chiefs opened the scoring in the first inning off starter Albert Suarez. Hak-Ju Lee reached on a bunt single and came around to score on a three-base error by center fielder Ty Morrison that put Matt Cerda on third. A Justin Bour sacrifice fly brought Cerda home to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead.
The Chiefs increased their lead in the second off Suarez and reliever Tyree Hayes. Francisco Guzman walked but was out at second on a fielders' choice that put Lee on first. Lee then stole second and advanced to third on a Cerda single. The Hot Rods then brought in Hayes and a fielding error by shortstop Robi Estrada on a DJ Fitzgerald grounder allowed Lee to score and put runners on first and second. Bour singled to score Cerda and Nelson Perez singled to score Fitzgerald for a 5-0 lead. Jonathon Mota walked to load the bases and Mario Mercedes singled to score a pair of runs and put Mota on second. Charles Thomas singled to drive in Mota for the sixth run of the inning to make it 8-0.
The scoring continued for the Chiefs in the third inning. Cerda walked and advanced to second on a Fitzgerald single. Bour walked to load the bases and Perez grounded out to first base to score Cerda and make it 9-0.
Frank Batista pitched four shutout innings, surrendering two hits while walking one and striking out three. Ronny Morla (3-2) pitched two and 1/3 innings and did not allow a run on three hits and a walk while striking out four. Steven Grife threw one and 2/3 innings and did not allow a baserunner while striking out three. Daniel Keefe pitched a scoreless ninth inning and gave up one hit while walking two and striking out two.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Mario Mercedes (C) - Mercedes went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs on Sunday. It was his 13th multi-hit game of the season and his fifth multi-RBI game.
