Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Beloit, WI - Beloit's Starting pitcher Gabe Bierman allowed back-to-back singles to start his outing against Cedar Rapids Tuesday Night. The Kernels put runners on first and third with no one out threatening to score in the top of the first frame. The right-hander then got a pop-out and back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the first inning without allowing a run.
Those three outs would be the first of 12 straight batters retired by Bierman, who finished with a line of 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 8K, BB getting the win in the 6-2 Sky Carp victory.
The Kernels took the lead in the contest, striking first, breaking a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning with a Willie Joe Garry Jr. single, plating Jose Salas to put Cedar Rapids up 1-0. Salas went 1-3, with two stolen bases, in his return to Beloit, where he played 48 games last season as a member of the Marlins organization.
Beloit responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, ending what started out as a very good Jaylen Nowlin outing in his third start of the year. The lefty began the night with four straight frames where he faced the minimum, including three 1-2-3 innings. But, in the fifth, Beloit loaded the bases with no one out. Zach Zubia worked a walk driving in a run, and then Kyler Castillo delivered a two-run single to put Beloit ahead 3-1.
Nowlin faced one more batter, striking out Zamora before his night finished. The southpaw tallied a season-high 4.1 innings and a career-high seven strikeouts but did finish with the loss allowing three runs on three hits.
The score would stay at 3-1 until the bottom of the seventh when Beloit would blow the game open with another three-run inning. With John Stankiewicz on the mound, the Sky Carp again loaded the bases with no outs, this time with a single, walk and another single. After a strikeout, Charlie Neuweiler entered the game and got a groundball force play at the plate to keep the bases loaded with two outs. A wild pitch scored a run from third and moved the runners to second and third to make the game 4-1, then a two-run single by Jacob Berry made it a 6-1 contest.
Noah Miller would add some excitement for the Kernels in the top of the eighth inning, lining a ball into center field that got under the diving Dalvy Rosario all the way into deep center field. Miller never broke stride and scored on the inside-the-park home run to make it a 6-2 contest, which would be the final.
The loss is the fourth straight of the Kernels, who fall to 5-4 on the season. It's the first road loss of the year and the first loss all season in a game where Cedar Rapids scored first. With the win, Beloit improves to 6-4 and the two squads will meet again tomorrow at 6:35, with Kyle Jones getting the start for Cedar Rapids opposite Evan Fitterer.
