Kapler to Join Sea Dogs

Portland, Maine- The Boston Red Sox have assigned outfielder Gabe Kapler to the Portland Sea Dogs from Extended Spring Training. Kapler will wear uniform # 44 and will be active for Portland's doubleheader against the Altoona Curve on Thursday, June 8th at 6:00 PM at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine. Outfielder Matt Van Der Bosch was placed on the disabled list.

Kapler has spent parts of the last three seasons with the Boston Red Sox. Kapler has been sidelined with a ruptured left Achilles tendon since September 14, 2005, an injury Kapler suffered in the 5th inning at Toronto. In 36 games with the Red Sox in 2005, Kapler hit .247 with one home run and nine RBI's.

The 30-year-old has a career batting average of .271 and has seen Major League time with the Tigers (1998-1999), Rangers (2000-2002), Rockies (2002-2003) and Red Sox (2003-2005).

Kapler appeared in one game for the Sea Dogs in 2003, where he doubled in three at-bats, before joining the Red Sox on June 28th.

The Sea Dogs are currently in first place in the Eastern League's Northern Division with a 33-22 record. Portland has won a season high six consecutive games.
