Defenders snap losing skid

June 7, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

The Connecticut Defenders jumped out in front early, but held on this time, snapping a seven game skid with a 5-3 victory over the Harrisburg Senators.

Chris Begg got some early run support starting with a Clay Timpner first inning lead off four pitch walk. After a stolen base and a wild pitch, Travis Ishikawa singled Timpner in for the first run of the game. The next batter, Aaron Sisk hit a two run blast for the second night in a row. It was Sisk's sixth, and it put Connecticut in front 3-0. The Defenders added to the lead in the third with an RBI single by Randy Walter, but Harrisburg would not allow Connecticut to coast.

In the bottom of the third, the Senators strung together four straight two out hits off of Chris Begg to score two runs. They cut further into the lead in the 6th with another run on a Melvin Dorta pinch hit double to make the score 4-3 before Dave Machemer turned the game over to the bullpen. Oscar Montero was flawless in the 7th and 8th innings, striking out the first five batters he faced. In the 8th, the Defenders added an insurance run on a Timpner two out single to score Jake Wald who was 3 for 4 on the night. That made the score 5-3, and the lead would stick. In the 9th, Billy Sadler did walk the lead off man, but struck out the next two and put the slump to rest with a fly out to right.

With one win under their belt the Defenders look to win the series with tomorrow's rubber game at Harrisburg with a 6:35 start. Right hand pitcher Garrett Broshuis (2-3) looks to rebound from a disappointing start in the rain delayed game against Portland when he takes the ball against Kip Bo knight (3-3) the Harrisburg righty.
