Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

GREENVILLE, SC - Kannapolis' torrid start at Fluor Field on Wednesday night seemed to imply the Intimidators were on their way to an easy win. It turned out to be anything but, as Kannapolis had to hang on to a 8-6 victory for their 11th win in a row.

Kyle Bellamy got Ty Weeden to pop out to second with the tying run at first base and two outs to end the drama and claim his first save of the season. The Drive had brought the tying run to the plate with no outs in the ninth after loading the bases against Dan Albritton, but Bellamy battled to get out of trouble.

Kannapolis posted seven runs in the first two innings against Jeremy Kehrt (1-1) to take a commanding early lead. Four of the runs scored with two outs in the second inning, as Drew Garcia, Brandon Short and Jon Gilmore all collected RBIs with two away.

But the Intimidators bats fell silent for the next six innings, as they managed just one more hit until the ninth. Kannapolis added an important insurance run in the final frame, with Garcia driving in his third run of the game to make it a 8-4 Intimidators lead.

Jon Gilmore made three errors in the contest, leading to four unearned runs. The most costly came in the ninth with two outs, when he let a ball roll through his legs to push two runs across and put the tying run aboard.

Charlie Leesman (13-4) became the first South Atlantic League pitcher to 13 wins, allowing four runs, two earned, in 6 2/3 innings. The southpaw fanned five and walked three in the winning effort.

Kevin Asselin also featured in relief, going a scoreless 1 1/3 innings.
