Hickory Crawdads News Release
LEXINGTON, KY - The Hickory Crawdads scored four runs in the last two innings, but came up just short, 9-7, against the Lexington Legends before 3,675 fans at Applebee's Park on Wednesday night. RF Aja Barto, playing in just his third game with Hickory, went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
The Crawdads (26-32, 59-68) struck first with a pair of tallies against RHP Robert Bono in the top of the fourth inning. 3B Matt West started the rally with a one-out walk and scored all the way from first base on a two-out, RBI double belted to right-center field by Barto. DH Mike Hollander then followed with a two-out, RBI single to bring in Barto and make it 2-0.
After the Crawdads added an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning, the Legends (24-34, 60-68) came right back with three runs against RHP Joe Wieland in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score. The run-scoring blows in the inning were an RBI double by RF Russell Dixon, a sacrifice fly by 2B Albert Cartwright and an RBI single by CF Eric Suttle, tying the game at 3-3.
RHP Andrew Doyle (0-1) made his Crawdads debut with a one-two-three frame of work in the bottom of the sixth. Lexington, though, struck for six runs (only three earned) in the bottom of the seventh to take a 9-3 lead.
However, Hickory came right back with three runs against RHP Brian Wabick (7-2) in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit in half. The rally started with a two-out single by LF Cristian Santana, who then took second on defensive indifference. Barto followed with an RBI single hit back up the middle to center field, plating Santana from second. Hollander then drew a walk to move Barto to second and extend the inning for C Leonel De Los Santos. After a wild pitch advanced both runners to second and third, De Los Santos drove them both in with a two-run single up the middle to center field, making it just a three-run game, 9-6.
RHP Mark Hamburger, who retired the final out in the seventh, dealt a quick three-up-three-down eighth inning, sending the game to the top of the ninth. SS Leury Garcia started the inning with his third single of the game and moved to second on a ground out. CF Jared Bolden then brought Garcia in with an RBI single to left field, extending his hitting streak to seven games and bringing the Crawdads to within two runs. RHP Kyle Godfrey dug in after that, and closed out the rest of the game with no further damage done, completing the 9-7 win for Lexington. Doyle was tagged with the loss for Hickory, while Wabick earned the win and Godfrey logged the save for Lexington.
