GreenJackets Win 2nd of the Week in 10 Over Savannah
August 26, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Augusta GreenJackets News Release
A night after allowing five runs to the Charleston RiverDogs in the 10th inning, the Augusta GreenJackets found things more to their liking in extras. James Simmons' RBI single provided the go-ahead run in the GreenJackets 4-3 extra-inning win over the Savannah Sand Gnats from Historic Grayson Stadium on Tuesday night.
For the GreenJackets, it's their second extra-inning win over the Gnats this week. The victory keeps Augusta 2.5 games out of first place, thanks to the win earlier in the evening by the division-leading Asheville Tourists.
Andy D'Alessio's first-inning single gave the GreenJackets an early edge but three unearned runs off Ari Ronick in the last half of the inning gave it right back. Nick Giarraputo knocked in the tying run with a single while Jean Luc Blaquiere's single plated two more.
Augusta hung around and tied the game in the fifth with four straight hits. Josh Mazzola's league-leading 92nd RBI on a single brought the Jackets to within one while Andy D'Alessio's run-scoring double off the base of the wall in right-center tied the game at three.
In the 10th, Ehire Adrianza walked to open the frame and moved to second on Eliezer Zambrano's second sacrifice bunt of the game. Adrianza moved to third on a wild pitch before Simmons knocked him home with his hit past a drawn-in infield.
Neither starter factored in the decision in the fourth meeting this season between Augusta's Ari Ronick and Savannah's Jeurys Familia. Ronick did equal his career-high in strikeouts with eight in six innings. He allowed three unearned runs on five hits and a walk.
Chris Wilson (4-5) threw three scoreless innings of one-hit baseball, striking out five and walking one to get the win. Rhiner Cruz (3-3) allowed the winning run on two hits and two walks in 1.l innings to take the loss.
In a sloppy game, the GreenJackets win despite committing five errors. Both teams combined to leave 24 runners on base, throw three wild pitches, and hit five batters
Andrew Reichard (3-4, 2.98) takes the ball for the GreenJackets on Wednesday as Augusta goes for the series win. Savannah will counter with Robert Carson (8-9, 2.93). First pitch from Historic Grayson Stadium is at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
Next Monday, the GreenJackets return home for a three-game series against the Sand Gnats. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. on Monday and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
