Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Rome's Shayne Moody slapped a game-winning two-run single down the left-field line to complete a late comeback to give the Braves a 5-4 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs in front of 3,032 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Wednesday evening.
With the victory, Rome improves to 62-64 on the season (27-29 second half), while Charleston falls to 64-62 (26-30 second half).
After retiring the first two batters in the ninth inning, RiverDogs closer Jeff Williams was touched for back-to-back singles by Derek Wiley and Kuyaunnis Miles, Ryan Barba was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Moody's two-run clutch knock.
The comeback was the second in as many games this series, with the RiverDogs scoring the game's final nine runs Tuesday night in a mesmerizing 10-9, 12-inning triumph.
The first offensive burst of the contest came from Rome in the third inning off Charleston starter Dan Kapala. Wiley reached on an error and moved to second on a single by Miles. Following a pop-out, Moody singled softly to right field to load the bases, and Joel Campusano grounded into an RBI fielder's choice for a 1-0 lead.
Rome then perfectly executed a double steal with Miles stealing home and Joel Campusano taking second base to make the score 2-0. Luis Sumoza capped the inning with a line RBI double to left-center to hand the guests a 3-0 advantage.
Kapala would take the no-decision, tossing five complete innings and allowing three runs - none earned - on five base hits.
Like the night before, Charleston would roar back in the fifth against starter Zeke Spruill. Jeff Farnham and Jose Pirela stroked non-consecutive doubles to plate Farnham which cut the lead to 3-1. Abraham Almonte then stepped to the plate and clobbered a game-tying two-run homer to right-center, his fifth of the year, to knot the score at 3 apiece.
Spruil was also given a no-decision for Rome, surrendering three runs on eight hits in his five complete stanzas.
Charleston would seize the lead at 4-3 in the seventh on Almonte's two-out, bloop RBI single off relief pitcher Angelo Paulino, who picked up his sixth win of the season against four losses. In the process, Almonte increased his hitting streak to 17 games.
Rome attempted to tie the game in the eighth with two outs on Sumoza's fourth hit of the game, a single to left field. Almonte threw a perfect strike to the plate to cut down the potential tying run in Adam Milligan, who crashed into catcher Farnham in an attempt to jar the ball loose.
RiverDogs reliever Edwin Walker threw three scoreless innings and allowed three hits, while Jeff Williams (1-2) took the loss for the RiverDogs and was charged with two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out one.
Charleston out-hit Rome, 12-11, with Almonte pacing the way with three while Pirela, Garrison Lassiter and Farnham each contributing two. Joining Sumoza four hits for Rome were Moody and Miles with two apiece.
