Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Savannah, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets, for better or worse, are turning this extra innings thing into a habit. Savannah scored three runs in the ninth to set up the Wilmer Flores RBI hit in the 11th, giving the Sand Gnats the 4-3 win on Wednesday night in Augusta's third straight extra-inning contest.
Savannah batted around in the ninth to tie the game, utilizing five hits and a walk. Joey August's bloop one-out single hit the left-field line to score two and bring the Jackets lead down to one. Two batters later, Josh Satin smacked a single to tie the game at three before Edwin Quirarte got the last two outs of the ninth to send the game to extra frames.
The Sand Gnats threatened off Quirarte in the tenth before getting two runners on thanks to a costly fielding error by Josh Mazzola - the only Augusta miscue of the night in the field - and a Quirarte walk. Justin Fitzgerald allowed the winning Flores single on the third pitch he delivered of the night.
Andrew Reichard was the early story of the game for the GreenJackets, delivering another fine start against the Gnats. He finished one out shy of a complete game against Savannah in his last start and on Wednesday, he hurled seven shutout innings of four-hit baseball with two walks. Reichard struck out a season-high seven in the no decision.
Ehire Adrianza's sacrifice fly put the Jackets up a run in the second inning and Augusta wouldn't add insurance until the ninth, when Josh Mazzola singled home Dom Duggan. Later in the inning, Mazzola scored on Juan Perez's suicide squeeze bunt to bring the lead to three before the Gnats tied the game in the ninth.
Quirarte (6-3) takes the loss after two bumpy innings of relief, allowing just the winning run on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. John Church (1-2) fired two scoreless, hitless innings to get the win.
With the loss, the GreenJackets fall to 4-7 in extra innings this season. They'll send Mike Loree (8-8, 4.47) to the mound to try and earn the series win in the rubber game on Thursday. First pitch from Historic Grayson Stadium is at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
Next Monday, the GreenJackets return home for a three-game series against the Sand Gnats. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. on Monday and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
