Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

GENEVA, IL -- Four Kane County Cougar pitchers combined on a nine hit 3-0 shutout of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Monday night at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougar hurlers combined for 15 strikeouts on the night. Reliever Jason Fernandez was the winning pitcher as he was called into the game in an emergency situation.

That situation happened in the top of the third inning. Carlos Triunfel sent a line drive back at Kane County starter Craig Italiano. The ball hit Italiano in the forehead, flew over to the warning track in front of the Kane County dugout on the first base side, and bounced into the stands for a ground rule double. The Cougar pitcher lay on the mound for a few moments, but stayed conscious through it all. Then, after a few more moments of being checked out by the Kane County training staff, Italiano walked off the field under his own power.

When play resumed, Fernandez got out of the inning and went on to pitch 3-1/3 innings of shutout ball allowing two hits and striking out six.

Greg Dowling started the scoring with a solo home run off Wisconsin starting pitcher Chris Tillman in the bottom of the third inning. In the sixth, Jake Smith homered off reliever Rollie Gibson for a 2-0 lead.

Kane County (8-28) pushed another run across the plate with an RBI double by Todd Johnson in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Scott Moore entered the game with a runner at first and two outs in the top of the eighth. He got a strikeout to end the inning and went on to pitch a scoreless ninth inning for the save.

Tuesday was the first time this season Wisconsin (10-25) has been shutout.

The Rattlers and Cougars conclude their brief two game series on Tuesday afternoon. Ricky Orta (1-1, 5.00) is scheduled as the starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Kane County will send Andrew Bailey (0-1, 13.50) to the hill. Game time is 12:00 noon.
