Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities took a two-run lead into the ninth inning Monday night at John O'Donnell Stadium, but the Burlington Bees homered to tie the score before pulling out the 11-inning win by a 4-3 margin.

The Quad Cities (22-16) pitching staff registered a season-high 17 strikeouts but also blew their first save of the season. Burlington (15-21) snapped a three game skid with the win while stopping a three-game Swing losing streak.

Quad Cities had a 3-1 edge after six innings of play, and tandem starter Shaun Garceau looked like he would have no problem holding the lead. The hard-throwing 19-year-old struck out seven without allowing a hit through his first three innings of work, but walked the leadoff man in the ninth. One out later Joe Dickerson made him pay, blasting his second homer of the year over the fence in right to tie the game at 3-3.

After failing to convert with men at second and third and nobody out in the tenth inning, the Bees scored the decisive run in the eleventh against Swing reliever Kyle Sadlowski (0-1). With men at the corners and one away Jase Turner came up with the big hit, driving home pinch-runner Jeremy Jirschele with a single up the middle for the 4-3 win.

The victory went to Brent Fisher (1-3), who held Quad Cities to just one hit and no runs over the final five innings of the ballgame.

Quad Cities was trailing 1-0 when they got even in the fifth. Luke Gorsett doubled with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch. With the infield in Jared Schweitzer came to the plate, participating in his first game since April 20 after spending three weeks on the Disabled List. The 23-year-old Canadian promptly grounded a base hit through the left side of the drawn-in infield to even the score at 1-1.

One inning later, the Swing took the lead. Donovan Solano led off the frame with a single to center and scored all the way from first when Brandon Buckman's double bounced past the right fielder. Later in the frame the bases were loaded with nobody out when Jaime Landin bounced into a 4-6-3 double play, but Buckman crossed the plate for the 3-1 lead.

That score looked like it would hold into the ninth inning, but Dickerson changed that with one Swing of the bat.

Starter Eddie Degerman threw extremely well for the Swing over the first five innings of the game, striking out seven without issuing a walk. The righty out of Rice University allowed one unearned run on three hits and retired the last eight batters that he faced in order. He combined with Garceau, Armando Carrasco, and Sadlowski for 17 strikeouts.
