
LumberKings dominant in 7-2 win over Kernels

Craig Gentry was 5 for 5 with three doubles and an RBI as the Clinton LumberKings won their fifth game in seven meetings from the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 7-2, in front of 1,274 fans on a warm and windy Monday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The LumberKings, who are batting .319 as a team against the Kernels, pounded out 12 hits including five doubles. John Whittleman continued his personal assault against Kernel pitchers, going 2 for 4 with a HR and 2 RBI. In seven games, Whittleman is batting .481 (13-27) with three home runs and eight RBI.
Clinton starter Mike Ballard (4-3) scattered eight hits over 7-2/3 innings and held the Kernels to two runs and struck out four. Kernels starter Tim Schoeninger (5-2) gave up eight hits and four runs over six innings with a walk and five strikeouts.
Chris Pettit and Mark Trumbo paced the Kernels offense, both going 2 for 4. Pettit, Matt Sweeney and Hank Conger had a double and Conger and Trumbo each had an RBI.
The Kernels will try for the series split when they host the LumberKings at noon. Trevor Bell starts for the Kernels against Omar Poveda for Clinton. Gates open at 11 am as part of Z 102.9 Lunch at the Ballpark where fans can enjoy a triple play special of a hamburger, hot dog or cheeseburger, 20 ounce bottled soda or 16 ounce draft beer and chips or popcorn for just $5.
