Burlington Bees News Release

Davenport, IA (May 14, 2007) - Joe Dickerson belted a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game and Jase Turner drove in the game-winning run in the eleventh as the Burlington Bees (15-21) beat the Swing of the Quad Cities (22-16) 4-3 in eleven innings at John O'Donnell Stadium tonight. Brent Fisher allowed just one hit and no runs over the final five innings to earn his first win of the season. The Bees' win snaps a string of five straight losses against the Swing and three in a row overall.

The Bees scored the first run in the top of the second inning. Kurt Mertins doubled in front of Turner, who swung and missed at a pitch in the dirt for strike three. The ball got past the catcher Chris Grossman and when he recovered, his throw to first skipped in the dirt and rolled all the way down to the Bees' bullpen allowing Mertins to score and Turner to get to third. The run was unearned and the only run the Bees got against Swing starter Eddie Degerman through five innings. Degerman finished with seven strikeouts.

Bees' starter Ryan DiPietro was cruising early. He allowed just one hit through the first four innings before the Swing broke through in the fifth. With one out, Luke Gorsett doubled, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a base hit by Jared Schweitzer to tie the game. The Swing took the lead in the sixth. Donovan Solano led off with a single and scored on a double by Brandon Buckman. After Grossman reached on an error, Mark Shorey singled to load the bases with nobody out. DiPietro limited the damage by getting Jaime Landin to ground into a 4-6-3 double play as Buckman scored for a 3-1 lead and then got a groundout to end the inning.

Shaun Garceau took over on the mound for the Swing for the top of the sixth inning. Garceau struck out five of the first six batters he faced and had allowed just one walk through three innings before going back to the mound for the top of the ninth. In the ninth, Jeff Bianchi drew a leadoff walk and with one out scored in front of Dickerson's home run to right on a 1-2 pitch. After a walk to Mertins, Armando Carrasco replaced Garceau on the hill and got out of the inning with the tie intact.

Fisher worked a scoreless ninth to send the game to extra innings and the Bees missed a scoring chance in the tenth. Matt Morizio led off with a double and Alvi Morel moved pinch-runner O.D. Gonzalez to third with a sacrifice bunt and also reached when Carrasco threw late to third to try to get the lead runner. Morel stole second, giving the Bees two men in scoring position with no outs, but a groundout, a strikeout, and a popout ended the inning with the runners stranded. In the eleventh, Kyle Sadlowski took over and got Michael Thompson chased a pitch in the dirt for strike three, but Thompson reached as the ball went to the backstop. Jeremy Jirschele ran for Thompson and with one out, moved to second on a walk to Mertins setting up Turner's game-winning hit.

Fisher (1-3) got some good defense to get through the bottom of the eleventh inning. Buckman hit a popup to shallow left that hit off of Chris McConnell's glove, but landed in the glove of Dickerson for the first out. After a strikeout, Jirschele made a tumbling catch of another popup to shallow left to end the game.

The Bees and Swing complete this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at John O'Donnell Stadium. LH Everett Teaford (1-3, 4.81) will start for the Bees against RH Blake King (2-0, 4.15) for the Swing. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
