Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons played the first of three doubleheaders in the month of May on Monday night at Fifth Third Field. If the rest of the double dips go like Monday's, the Dragons might want to play them more often. Dayton swept the two games over the Fort Wayne Wizards, winning game one 4-1 and then taking the night cap by the score of 3-1.
Drew Stubbs opened up the scoring in game one with a two run homer off the scoreboard in left with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. The Dragons were bale to pick up another run in the inning off Wizards starter Orlando Lara (LP, 1-3) with three more consecutive hits off the lefty, including Juan Francisco's RBI single to right scoring Justin Turner for a 3-0 Dragons lead.
Gerardo Cabrera padded the lead with a solo homer off Lara in the bottom of the fourth inning to run the score to 4-0. It was more than enough for Rafael Gonzalez (WP, 6-0) to pick up the win. The right hander struggled with control at times allowing four walks, but he did not allow a run in six innings. The sixth win for Gonzalez ties him for the Midwest League lead in that category. Jose Rojas (ND) struggled in the seventh, allowing a hit and then three consecutive walks to allow a run, but Marcos Mateo (SV, 5) got Rayner Contreras to fly out to center with the bases loaded for the final out of game one.
Game two started with the Dragons scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff walk to Stubbs, Chris Valaika tripled to right-center off of John Hussey (LP, 0-1) to give the Dragons the 1-0 edge. Juan Francisco followed with an RBI single to right, and the Dragons led 2-0 after one inning of baseball. Dayton added an insurance run in the fifth on a solo home run by Chris Heisey, his second of the season.
Anthony Gressick (WP, 2-1) made his first start of the year for Dayton in game two of the doubleheader after having six appearances out of the bullpen. Gressick looked pretty comfortable in the starting role, pitching 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts and two walks.
The Dragons and the Fort Wayne Wizards wrap up the three game two day series at Fifth Third Field with a 7:00 PM first pitch on Tuesday night. LHP Travis Webb (2-1, 3.07 ERA) will start for the Dragons, while the Wizards will send LHP Nathan Culp (4-2, 2.59 ERA) to the hill. 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM. The game will also be streamed live on the internet via All-In Broadcasting at www.daytondragons.com.
