Varnell rejoins roster, Kirby retires

Fort Wayne, IN - Right-hander Grant Varnell was activated from disabled list today and right-hander Jon Kirby was placed on the San Diego Padres restricted retired list as the Fort Wayne Wizards start an 11-game, 12-day road trip.

Varnell was placed on the Wizards disabled list on April 30. In eight relief appearances this season, he is 0-1 with a 1.64 earned run average. In 11 innings of work, he has allowed eight hits, walked two and struck out six.

Kirby is 0-0 with one save and a 3.79 ERA in 12 relief appearances. In 19 innings, he has allowed 12 hits, walked 13 and struck out 11.

The Wizards open their road trip with a doubleheader against the Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds affiliate) at 6:00 p.m. tonight. After a single game on Tuesday and an off day on Wednesday, Fort Wayne will visit the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim affiliate) and Clinton Lumber Kings (Texas Rangers affiliate) for four-games each starting on Thursday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Fort Wayne returns to Memorial Stadium for the unofficial start of summer fun with a two-game series against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers affiliate) beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 25.
