Wichita Thunder News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder lost 6-2 to the Missouri Mavericks at the Kansas Coliseum on Saturday night. The Mavericks broke a scoreless tie late in the first period when Simon Watson tipped in Jared LAvender's soft shot from the point at 16:05. Just 19 seconds later, Jeff Christian swooped in behind the net and snuck a backhand shot on a wrap around past the right of Jon Horrell to make it 2-0. Horrell was then lifted in favor of Scott Campbell.
Brandon Kaleniecki finished off a three-on-one at the 4:36 mark in the second period to get Wichita on the board. Kaleniecki potted a last second pass at the top of the crease from Jay Henderson. 1:09 later, the Mavericks re-extended their lead. Karl Sellan worked a half-step breakaway and connected on a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Campbell. The Thunder cut into the lead for a second time at 16:15 when Chris McAllister took a shot from the left point that snuck through Alexandre Vincent's five hole. In the closing minutes of the period, Chris Kovalcik executed a clean body check on Jeff Christian near the Missouri penalty box. After targeting him near the Thunder's net, the NHL veteran elbowed Kovalcik in the head and hurried away, leaving the Thunder defenseman down on the ice. Christian was handed a five-minute major for elbowing.
Wichita could not capitalize on the continuous power play, which extended into the third period, and the Mavericks upped their lead to 4-2 shortly after it expired. Simon Watson poked one beyond Campbell from close range at 4:36 in the third, marking the third time in the game Missouri led by two goals. Christian sniped his second goal of the game, just clearing the top corner of the net from the left faceoff circle at 15:04 to make it 5-2. Derek Pallardy worked a shothanded breakaway in the game's final minute and scored on a wristshot for a 6-2 Mavericks' lead.
Horrell took the loss, saving nine of 11 shots. Campbell stopped 17 of 21 in the relief appearance. Vincent took the win, saving 23 of 25. Kaleniecki and Glenn Detulleo had multi point games. Wichita was 0 for 5 on the power play while Missouri was 0 for 2. The Mavericks improved to 7-0 against the Thunder this season.
