
Late comeback foiled in a shootout

Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Gorillas fought hard for one point Saturday night, dropping 4-3 in a shootout to the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees.
After Rio Grande Valley scored the game's first two markers, Amarillo countered back with less then two minutes remaining in the period. Rookie defenseman Jake Obermeyer slapped his one-timer from the far circle past Rio goaltender Wylie Rogers, cutting the Rio lead in half with a 1:09 remaining in the period. After one, Rio Grande Valley 2 Amarillo 1.
The Bees struck once in the middle period, giving the Rio Grande Valley Bees the 3-1 lead after two.
Amarillo did not wilt in the final period of play, tying the game in dramatic fashion. Forward Jason Chafe notched his second goal of the season midway through the final period to draw the Gorillas within one. With Amarillo's goaltender pulled with less than minute to play, forward Stuart MacRae fed a pass to defenseman Andrew Smale who rifled his shot past Wylie Rogers with one-second remaining to tie the game at three.
The game would go to a shootout after a scoreless overtime frame. Only one goal was scored in the 5-round shootout by either team. Rio's Tom Sawatske earned the game-winning goal. Final score in a shootout, Rio Grande Valley 4 Amarillo 3.
With his first period goal, Jake Obermeyer extends his point streak to three games...Jason Chafe earned his 4th multi-point game this season with a goal and assist...Andrew Smale's game-tying goal was his first home goal scored this season.
