Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Trenton, NJ- The Kalamazoo Wings avenged a loss a night before to the Trenton Devils by defeating Trenton 4-1 Thursday night at the Sun National Bank Center.
Despite being outshot 16-4 in the opening period, the K-Wings made the most of their opportunities scoring twice in the period. Playing defense because of a call-up earlier in the day to Ryan McGinnis, Sam Ftorek intercepted a Devils' pass at the blue-line and quickly fired it towards the net, where it was deflected by Trent Daavettila (15th) past Shane Connelly 6:35 into the period.
The goal by Kalamazoo ended Connelly's scoreless streak at 134:18.
Moving the puck on an odd-man rush midway in the period extended the lead for Kalamazoo. Skating right-to-left into the Devils zone, Justin Taylor left a drop-pass for Patrick Asselin, who roofed his 16th goal of the campaign past Connelly.
Ryan Nie was brilliant in the period turning aside 16 shots in the period, including four attempts on either breakaways or from close range.
Trenton kept pressuring Kalamazoo in the second period outshooting the K-Wings 12-4 in the frame. Putting the K-Wings on his back Nie kept up his stellar play from the first period adding two more point blank saves in the stanza. However, despite Nie's heroics, the Devils crept back into the game 18:46 into the period with a shorthanded penalty shot tally from Matt Lombardi (12th). The goal was Lombardi's team-leading second shorthander of the season.
After back-to-back delay of game penalties late in the third period on Trenton setup a five-on-three power-play, the K-Wings would put the game on ice with a one-time blast from Ftorek (7th).
Kory Karlander would cap off a three-point (1 goal, 2 assists) adding an empty-netter with 10 seconds remaining.
Nie, who was making 15th appearance in as many games for Kalamazoo, stopped 35 shots to record the victory.
The K-Wings will return home this Saturday, February 12th with a 7:30 p.m. versus the Greenville Road Warriors on Boy Scout Night and a Saturday "Celebrity" Series featuring Mayor Bobby Hopewell and the Killamazoo Derby Darlins.
