Trenton Devils News Release

Trenton, NJ - Ryan Nie made 35 saves and Trent Daavettila and Patrick Asselin scored first period goals as the Kalamazoo Wings defeated the Trenton Devils, 4-1, in the second of two games between the clubs Thursday at Sun National Bank Center. Matt Lombardi scored a shorthanded penalty shot goal for the only Devils score of the game in the second period but two more goals in the third period sealed the game for Kalamazoo.

Kory Karlander led the way for the Wings with an empty-net goal and two assists while Sam Ftorek picked up a goal and an assist in the win. It was the play of goaltender Ryan Nie that proved to be the difference, as the fifth-year pro frustrated the Devils for the second consecutive night. With 71 saves on 73 shots in two games vs. Trenton this week, only a power play goal and a penalty shot goal blemished Nie's ledger. With 17 victories, he's tied for third most in the ECHL.

Spending more than half of the second period on the penalty kill, the Devils still managed to outshoot the Wings 28-9 through two periods. But it was on one of the penalty kills that Trenton managed to crack Nie. With a high-sticking double minor called against Justin Pender, Lombardi managed to sneak into the zone and as he approached the net a Wings player appeared to throw his stick toward the puck and a penalty shot was awarded. On the chance, Lombardi started just left of the slot and then went straight in and fired a quick snapshot past Nie to get the Devils within a goal, trailing 2-1, entering the third period.

Nie and the Wings defense held off the Devils in the third period and sustaining the sharpest of the four Trenton power plays of the night. Following two delay-of-game penalties that put Kalamazoo on a five-on-three power play, Sam Ftorek blasted a one-timer past Connelly to give Kalamazoo an insurance goal for a 3-1 lead with six minutes remaining. It was Ftorek's second point of the night, earlier making a pinpoint slap pass that set up Trent Daavettila's first period goal.

Kory Karlander finished the scoring with an empty netter at 18:50, his 20th score of the season, as the Wings move back to ten points ahead of the Devils in the chase for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

With the loss, the Devils drop to 17-26-1-3 and 38 points while the win propels the Wings to 22-20-2-2 and 48 points. The Devils head to Reading for a weekend series against the Royals, playing at Sovereign Center Saturday at 7:05 p.m. and Sunday at 5:05 p.m.
