Durham Bulls News Release

Durham, NC - The Tampa Bay Rays today selected Durham Bulls outfielder Justin Ruggiano to Tampa Bay. Ruggiano was hitting .308 with a team leading six home runs, 30 RBI (third in the International League), and 11 stolen bases (tied for third in the IL) for the Bulls this season.

Ruggiano, who entered the season as the Bulls Triple-A all-time leader in runs and hits has continued his assault on the record books this season. He is tied with Chris Richard for the Triple-A career doubles record at 117, trails Richard by three for the RBI mark with 296, and with his four stolen bases in yesterday's game against Louisville moves to within three stolen bases of B.J. Upton's 107.

He had several exciting moments with the Bulls this season, including back-to-back, two home run games at home April 18 against Gwinnett and April 19 against Charlotte. He also delivered three walk off hits April 18 vs. Gwinnett (home run), May 7 vs. Syracuse (2-run single), May 10 vs. Indianapolis (RBI single).

The Tampa Bay Rays made room for Ruggiano on their roster by designating struggling first baseman Dan Johnson for assignment. Johnson, 31, appeared in 25 games for the Rays this season, including 22 starts (19-1B, 3-DH).
