Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - Felipe Lopez delivered four hits, including a home run in the second inning, but the Bulls fell 9-8 to the Louisville Bats on Friday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Lopez hit in every game against Louisville and went 11-16 with 7 RBI in the series.
Russ Canzler's single in the second inning started things off for the Bulls. After a Robinson Chirinos double, JJ Furmaniak laid down a bunt that brought Canzler home to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead. Ray Olmedo was hit by a pitch, and then Desmond Jennings drew a walk to load the bases for Brandon Guyer. Guyer ripped a bases clearing double to right field to make it 4-0. Felipe Lopez then delivered his first home run of the season off of Scott Carroll to give the Bulls a 6-0 lead.
The Bats responded with four runs in the third inning highlighted by Todd Frazier's three run home run off of Bulls starter Brian Baker cutting the lead to 6-4. They would add five more in the fourth inning highlighted by Kristopher Negron's two-run double to take a 9-6 lead.
The Bulls battled back picking up a run in the fifth when Chirinos singled home Russ Canzler cutting the lead to 9-7. They would threaten again in the ninth inning putting runners on the corners with no one out, before Chris Carter grounded into a double-play that scored Guyer and cut the lead to 9-8. Carlos Fisher was able to strike out Canzler to end the game and earn his fifth save of the season.
Scott Carroll (2-1) picked up the win despite going six innings and allowing 11 hits and seven runs, while walking one and striking out two. Brian Baker (2-3) took the loss going 3.2 innings allowing eight hits, and nine runs, while walking one and striking out four.
Durham will begin a four-game series at Huntington Park in Columbus at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday May 21. Chris Bootcheck (1-0 1.50) will take the mound for his first start of the season against the Clippers Corey Kluber (1-4 6.94).
