
Jumbo Shrimp Route Tides to Win Series Opener

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -Chi Chi González pitched 7.0 innings of one-run ball and Troy Johnston homered to lead the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp to an 11-2 win in Tuesday's series opener against the Norfolk Tides at 121 Financial Ballpark.
González (6-8) went 7.0 innings, striking out five batters, and only allowed one run on five hits.
Jacksonville (50-57,19-15) plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Jacob Amaya led off the frame with a double, and two batters later, Paul McIntosh laced a base knock off Norfolk (68-40, 20-13) starter Garrett Stallings (3-4), scoring Amaya to put the Jumbo Shrimp ahead 1-0.
Jacksonville extended their lead in the home half of the third inning. Xavier Edwards and Garrett Hampson led off the frame with a pair of singles. Johnston ripped a single of his own, plating Edwards and leaving runners on the corners. With one down, Amaya grounded out, scoring Hampson and giving the Jumbo Shrimp a 3-0 advantage.
The runs did not stop for Jacksonville in the fourth frame. Griffin Conine doubled to start the inning. McIntosh walked and Jake Mangum singled to load the bases. Edwards followed with a base hit, scoring Conine and McIntosh, and in the ensuing at-bat, stole second. Johnston (3) then scorched a three-run blast to put the Jumbo Shrimp ahead 8-0.
Jacksonville tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Peyton Burdick drew a walk, and one out later, McIntosh walked. Mangum singled to load the bases. Edwards hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Burdick to make it a nine-run game.
Norfolk got on the board in the top of the sixth frame. Heston Kjerstad (8) hit an inside-the-park home run, cutting the deficit to, 9-1.
The Tides got one back in the top of the eighth inning. Connor Norby and Kjerstad each singled with one out. With runners on the corners, Joey Ortiz singled, scoring Norby to make it a 9-2 ballgame.
The Jumbo Shrimp extended their lead in the bottom of the eighth frame. Amaya walked with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Burdick singled, leaving runners on first and third. Conine batted in Amaya on a single and in the ensuing at-bat, McIntosh singled to load the bases. Mangum hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Burdick, and capping the scoring at 11-2.
Jacksonville and Norfolk continue their series Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Bryan Hoeing (1-0, 2.08 ERA) gets the nod for the Jumbo Shrimp, and RHP Chayce McDermott (3-0, 1.89 ERA) starts for the Tides. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on Bally Live, MiLB.tv., ESPN 690, and espn690.com.
