Last time out...
Jeremy Gooding struck out 13 batters over eight and a third innings and the Freedom knocked off the Beach Bums by a final score of 5-2 on Sunday night in Traverse City. Gooding's 13 K's were the most by a Freedom pitcher in a single game this season. The Freedom scored two runs in the second inning as Kyle Carter delivered a sacrifice fly and Gaby Juarbe contributed a RBI single. A Zac Mitchell RBI grounder scored Daniel Fraga to extend the lead. In the fourth, Sam Eberle doubled with one away and eventually scored on a Gaby Juarbe RBI grounder. Eberle got things rolling again in the seventh as he doubled to start the frame. Two outs later a Jose Vargas throwing error allowed Eberle to score and the Freedom took a 5-0 lead. The night belonged to Gooding though as he struck out the side in the second inning and the sixth as well. The Beach Bums scored two in the ninth but Ed Kohout came in and locked down the save.
For Starters...
Tony Vocca is making his fifth start of the season tonight and 19th overall appearance. His most recent outing was on July 17 as he went two and a third innings, giving up three hits and no runs, walking one and striking out three out of the bullpen against Traverse City. His most recent start was a win against Evansville on July 9 as he went five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits in a 3-2 victory. A native of Cottonwood, Arizona, Vocca played his college ball first at Yavapai College, then the University of Utah and later for Minnesota State University-Mankato. He posted a 12-8 record and 5.21 ERA over the course of his four-year college career, also tallying 125 strikeouts in 140 innings pitched. In 2013, after his college days were over, Vocca pitched for the Prescott Montezuma Federals of the Freedom Pro Baseball League, a four-team independent league based out of Arizona. Vocca spent this past winter pitching for the Adelaide Bite of the Australian Baseball League.
Home Sweet Home?
The Freedom's home record this season is 13-17, the fourth worst mark in the league. Meanwhile, the Aviators have been road warriors, posting a record of 16-8, the second best in the league.
