Normal, IL- Led by Mike Garza's four-hit day, the Joliet Slammers (23-33) score their most runs in a single game this season, topping the Normal CornBelters (32-24) 16-2 on Wednesday night.
After being shut out the night before, the Slammers score three runs against lefty Kevin Brahney in the top of the first inning. CF Charlie White led off with a walk before stealing second. RF Nate Roberts moved him to third with a base-knock before swiping second himself. With one out, SS Alfredo Rodriguez cracked a line drive to center. The ball bounced off the turf and got past the CF Mark Micowski. White and Roberts scored while Rodriguez advanced to third on the triple. 3B Mike Garza followed with single to right, driving in Rodriguez and putting Joliet up 3-0 after the top of the first.
The Slammers added to their lead in the second. With two outs, 2B Max Casper singled and White reached on a bunt hit. With a pair aboard, Roberts lined a single to right scoring Casper. The hit gave the Slammers a 4-0 lead.
The Slammers broke the game open with an eight-run third inning. SS Alfredo Rodriguez led off the frame with a double to the right field corner. Garza singled to move Rodriguez to third and LF Phil Bates walked to load the bases. Reliever Jake Negrete came in for lefty Kevin Brahney. C Jack Cleary grounded into a 5-2 fielder's choice with Rodriguez thrown out at home. With the bases still loaded, DH Sam Klein singled to right to drive in Garza, giving Joliet a 5-0 lead. Ozney Guillen short armed the throw back to the infield, giving Bates time to come in score. With the Slammers up 6-0, Casper was hit by a bunch and White drove in a run with a single. Reliever Jake Negrete came in for lefty Kevin Brahney. After the Slammers pushed three more across, Garza hit a bases clearing triple to give the Slammers a 12-0 lead after the inning.
With a comfortable lead, Andrew Strenge tossed one of his better outinga of the season. He carried a no hitter into the fifth inning, which was broken up by a DH Sam Judah single. Judah would later cross home, making the score 12-1 Slammers after five. The CornBelters added a run in the sixth stanza, with Joliet still leading 12-2 after the frame. Strenge lasted seven innings, giving up just two runs on two hits while fanning six.
The Slammers scored four more times in the eighth inning. Bates scored on wild pitch with Kline up and Cleary crossed home when Casper reached on an error. A single by LF Hunter Ridge scored Kline and Nate Roberts drove in one more with a double up the left field line. The Slammers held on to their 16-2 lead to win by that final. Mike Garza was our Merchants and Manufacturers Bank Player of the Game, going 4-for-5 with two singles, a double and a triple. He also drove in four runs and scored one himself. The Slammers take on Normal in the rubber match of their three-game series on Thursday. RHP Kevin Walter will take on righty Michael Schweiss.
