Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers (38-33) defeated the Sacramento River Cats (30-41) behind a strong offensive output and solid pitching on Monday night. Tacoma scored first and never surrendered the lead, winning 7-4 at Cheney Stadium to tie the series 3-3.
Jake Hager wasted little time getting the Rainiers on the board, launching the second pitch he saw to left for his sixth home run on the year. The blast marked the eighth time this season Tacoma has led off the game with a home run. After a Dillion Thomas double later in the inning, Taylor Trammell extended the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single to right.
Sacramento struck back in the second inning. With two men on, Joe McCarthy lined an RBI single to center to score Joey Bart (single) and bring the score to 2-1. An inning later, the Rainiers added on with a Jose Marmolejos two-run double that scored Donovan Walton (walk) and Thomas (single).
The River Cats got a run back in the fourth, thanks to a McCarthy RBI double to bring around Heliot Ramos (double). The Rainiers maintained their two-run cushion until Mauricio Dubon belted his second homer of the year in seventh, closing the gap to 4-3.
Tacoma put up a crooked number in the bottom half of the inning, expanding the lead to four. A Marmolejos bases-loaded walk forced in Walton (single), and Jose Godoy followed suit with a two-run single to score Thomas (single) and Trammell (walk), giving the Rainiers a 7-3 advantage.
A Jason Krizan solo shot in the eighth gave Sacramento their fourth run of the game, but that would be all for the River Cats offense.
Rainiers' starter Logan Verrett worked a quality start, working seven innings of three-run ball, giving up seven hits, walking three and striking out eight. David Huff closed the door with two innings, surrendering one run on two hits and a walk, striking out two in the process. For Sacramento, Gerson Bautista and Luis Gonzalez provided the bright spot for the pitching staff, combining for two shutout innings of one-hit ball in relief.
The Rainiers will be back at Cheney Stadium Tuesday night at 7:05 for the rubber match of the series against the River Cats. Tacoma will go with a bullpen game, while Sacramento will counter with RHP Gerson Garabito.
